MTW seeks new trustees for its board
For over 30 years Music Theatre Wales has been one of the UK’s leading contemporary opera companies: commissioning new works, creating new productions of existing modern masterpieces and touring to venues across the UK and beyond.
Our work has always been bold, dramatic and thought provoking but as we move into the fast shifting world of the 2020’s, we are embarking upon a dynamic process of change. In order to reach more people, we know we need to create work that not only attracts and speaks to new audiences but enables diverse audiences and participants to feel they can have a meaningful relationship with the company.
We are therefore devising pioneering new programmes that will support this change. Our mission is to ensure that the people creating, performing and attending our productions come from all corners of society, something mainstream opera has yet to achieve but where we believe we can act as a trailblazer for the sector.
Two new programmes will begin the process of widening access to our work:
- New Directions is led by Associate Artist, Elayce Ismail and aims to transform the diversity of the artists we work with. We believe that the way to develop the artform is to engage with new and different artists and audiences.
- Future Directions is a creative engagement programme for young people, built around a central group who will work in collaboration with two composers/music makers from different musical backgrounds.
We are looking for people to join our Board to support us as we open ourselves up to working in a more flexible and imaginative way. We are actively seeking to expand the range of experiences (both personal and professional), cultural perspectives and artistic interests in our Board and welcome applications from anyone who believes they have something to offer and who could be a passionate advocate for our work.
Our Board of Trustees, led by our Chair, Christine Bradwell, has overall control of our organisation and is responsible for making sure that the company is being managed effectively, efficiently, ethically and sustainably. Being a Trustee will enable you to use your knowledge and experience to support our work and the cultural sector more widely. It will also give you the chance to develop new skills, benefitting you both professionally and personally. You can find out more about what being a Trustee involves by going to the Charity Commission website www.gov.uk.
The Board holds four meetings a year, usually at our base in Cardiff, but due to the current restrictions, our recent meetings have taken place remotely via Zoom.
All positions are voluntary and unpaid, although out of pocket expenses, such as reasonable travel and childcare costs, will be reimbursed.
We are looking for Trustees who share our vision, who will challenge preconceptions, who will represent our audiences and artists, and who will support our staff team.
