Make an Aria Masterclass

Friday 11 May | 7.30pm | Tickets £5 Mathias Hall | School of Music | Bangor University

Make an Aria is part of Music Theatre Wales’ artist development programme, and introduces composers and writers to the process of writing opera by inviting them to collaborate in writing a single aria. Each year we bring together new composers and writers who have never written opera before, presenting them with a theme to acts as a springboard for their shared creative process.

Over the last few months, our composer/librettist teams have been working on their scores, exploring representations of dislocation and exploitation as central themes within the works. Michael McCarthy and Richard Baker have supported the teams throughout with sessions focused on guiding them through the process of shaping and refining the work.

In this public Masterclass, singers Llio Evans, Leah-Marian Jones and Robyn Lyn Evans will perform the arias, with insights and feedback provided by award-winning composer John Hardy, well known for his work for stage, film and TV, (most recently Y Gwyll/Hinterland). This is a great opportunity to get a snapshot into the makings of an opera.
