We are delighted to announce that Music Theatre Wales has received Atsain funding from Anthem Music Fund Wales for 2023 to support our project Future Directions.

Music Theatre Wales and Britten Pears Arts production of Violet has received a second award nomination in the space of a week. Violet has been nominated in the World Premiere category for the 2022 International Opera Awards.

Composed by Tom Coult with the libretto by Alice Birch, the production was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but when it finally reached the stage it received rave reviews across the UK press.

Two new productions of Violet have been announced within one year of the work being premiered – in Ulm, Germany and in Paris.

Our first Future Directions project has concluded with the completion of the second residency in Cardiff. The young people involved have created an insightful, imaginative piece called ‘The Things That Go Unnoticed’ which we look forward to sharing with you.

Two works commissioned by Music Theatre Wales have won awards this week: The Jollof House Party Opera by Tumi Wiliams and Sita Thomas & AMAZON by Alex Ho and Elayce Ismail.

Harrison Birtwistle, who died on 18th April 2022, was THE towering figure in new music in the UK for over 50 years and the composer who best understood and most challenged what music drama could be in the 20th and 21st centuries.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS is a young people’s programme with a difference, where young people will work in collaboration with professional Music-Creators, learning from and inspiring each other to explore what opera and music theatre mean for themselves and their communities.

Writer Alice Birch and composer Tom Coult are amongst the most compelling voices in their respective fields and their first opera, developed at Snape Maltings as part of its Jerwood Opera Writing Programme, is an opera for now and about now.

Music Theatre Wales and London Sinfonietta have been working together to support the development of a new work by Welsh composer Luke Lewis and Cardiff filmmaker and video artist Simon Clode.
