Commission Opportunity for Creators: Street Art Opera
Street Art Opera is back. After the buzz around our last commissions – Rahmat-Mercy-Tugaredd and Out of Time – MTW is inviting Welsh artists, and artists developing their practice in Wales, to pitch bold ideas for two brand-new Street Art Operas for public showings in Autumn 2026. This is opera projected onto urban spaces outdoors, absorbed on silent-disco headphones, and designed to stop passers-by in their tracks.
We’re looking for two punchy, expressive mini-operas — comic, satirical, poignant, powerful — that embrace a street-art aesthetic: graphic illustration, graffiti, animation, even green-screen techniques, with text integrated into the image. Works can be in Welsh or English (and may include other languages), run to around 10 minutes, and must feature at least one opera singer – though genre, instrumentation and additional voices are completely up to you.
Come as a creative team (music creator, writer/director, visual artist/animator) or let us help with introductions. We’ll support you throughout – dramaturgy, contracting performers, and arranging recording/filming – while you drive the producing, budget, and artistic choices. Recent installations have lit up spaces from WMC/Llais to Grange Pavilion, Focus Wales and beyond, taking opera directly to people who might never step into a theatre.
