The Artist and the Archive
Thursday 11th September at Treorchy Library 5pm – 6.15
Followed by a light supper before the performance event Our Music, Our Story at the Parc and Dare at 7.30
Join us for a discission about the role of the artist/filmmaker in the community and the ethics of making and using images and interviews of people beyond the time in which they are made.
Whose archive is it?
What is the responsibility of the contemporary artist when using archive materials?
When the people concerned are no longer around and have no control over the use of their image or what they said, do we have a duty to protect their identity?
Hosted at Treorchy Library, we will be presenting a panel led discussion with:
- Margaret Dickinson – One of the original filmmakers of Women of the Rhondda – a well known and well loved early feminist film from 1971 which shed new light on the lives of local women
- Darren Macey from Rhondda Heritage Park
- Harriet Fleuriot – local filmmaker, including Interior Windows featuring interviews with local women
- Nick Kelland from Treorchy Library
- Kamalagita Hughes – local story collector and teller
