Music Theatre Wales and Britten Pears Arts production of Violet has received a second award nomination in the space of a week. Violet has been nominated in the World Premiere category for the 2022 International Opera Awards, the only UK company to be nominated in this category. Composed by Tom Coult with text by Alice Birch, the production was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but when it finally reached the stage it received rave reviews across the UK press.

This year’s awards ceremony will be taking place on Monday 28 November at The Teatro Real de Madrid. This is the first time in the awards’ history that they will be presented outside of the United Kingdom.

Speaking about this nomination, MTW Director Michael McCarthy said ‘We are delighted to once again see Violet nominated during this awards season. It is exciting to see the production recognised within the industry and on an international scale. MTW has a long held reputation for punching well above our weight in the opera world, and flying the flag for Wales as a creative nation. This was an inspiring work by Tom Coult and Alice Birch to bring to the stage.’

Also nominated in this category are Awakenings (Tobias Picker/Opera Theatre of Saint Louis), Castor and Patience (Gregory Spears/Cincinnati Opera), Grete Minde (Eugen Engel/Theater Magdeburg), M. Butterfly (Huang Ruo/Santa Fe Opera) and The Time of our Singing (Kris Defoort/La Monnaie De Munt).
